Rava idli is a popular Breakfast food that originated in the Tiffin centers of Karnataka. It is a variation of the traditional Idli recipe but made with semolina, curd and some spices. Rava means semolina and idli are steamed cakes.
To begin with this recipe, we have to prepare a few ingredients. You can have soft rawa idlis using 19 ingredients and 8 steps. Here is how you can achieve it.
The ingredients needed to make Soft Rawa Idlis:
- Prepare 11/2 cups semolina (sooji)
- Prepare 1 cup curd(fresh /sour)
- Get 2 tbsp cooking oil
- Take 1 tbsp mustard seeds
- Get 1/4 tsp hing
- Take 8-10 curry leaves, chopped
- Make ready 3 pieces red chilli (without seeds)
- Get 2 green chillies, chopped
- Get 3 tbsp urad dal
- Make ready 5 broken cashews
- Get Some kismis
- Prepare 2 tbsp groundnuts, fried and split
- Take 1 tbsp white sesame (til) seeds
- Make ready As per taste Salt
- Take 1 inch ginger chopped
- Prepare 1 pinch hing
- Take As needed Oil to grease
- Take 1 tbsp fruit salt (optional)
- Get 3-4 roasted cashew to garnish
Here is a quick recipe to enjoy those lovely soft fluffy instant rava idlis whenever the mood strikes. Serve with coconut or peanut chutney for a delicious and healthy meal. The traditional idli preparation is time-consuming and labor-intensive. I had posted the recipe for Super Soft White Idlis using udad dal and parboiled rice.
Instructions to make Soft Rawa Idlis:
- Arrange the ingredients. Heat oil. Fry the cashews for garnish.
- To the same oil add mustard seeds. Allow to crack mustard seeds.
- Then add curry leaves,red and green chilli and saute.
- Now add urad dal,1/4 tsp hing, broken kaju, kismis, ground nuts, til and salt.
- Saute always on low flame. Here add the semolina, ginger and fry till the water dries up, not to change the semolina colour. With such frying the sooji is puffed and soaks curd and water,thus swell up.
- Cool the sooji mixture and add curd and water as required. Keep to rest at least 20 minutes and max for 1 -2 hours.
- Grease the mold. Add a pinch of hing to the batter. If required,add 1 tbsp mitha soda. Pour required amount of batter. Garnish with fried cashews. Steam in boiling water for 3 minutes.

Then, I got this request from Rama, my cousin, for the recipe for Idli with Idli Rava (Rice Rava or Cream of Rice) as she finds it difficult to get parboiled rice in USA. If you double the quantity of all ingredients, you need to double the quantity of Eno too. Soak the idli rava in water. The waters should just cover the rava. do not add more water. Soak the urad dal in water and if adding poha or methi seeds add that too.
