The ingredients needed to make Nei Appam:
  1. Prepare 2 cups Raw rice -
  2. Make ready 1 1/2 cups Jaggery grated -
  3. Get 3/4 cup Wheat flour -
  4. Get 1/4 tsp Cardamom powder -
  5. Get 1/4 tsp Dry ginger powder -
  6. Prepare 1 pinch Nutmeg or jaiphal powder
  7. Prepare pieces Coconut cut into small
  8. Get 2 bananas
  9. Take Ghee for frying

Appam is one of the important neivedhyam dish for Krishna Jayanthi festival. Instructions to make Nei Appam:
  1. Soak the rice for 11/2 to 2 hours
  2. Then drain the water completely and grind it in a mixie.Do not add water and grind it coarsely.
  3. Now add grated Jaggery and cut banana pieces. Grind it with 2 pulse not more.
  4. Then transfer it to a bowl and add wheat flour. Cardamom powder, dry ginger powder, jaiphal powder and a pinch of salt. Mix all the ingredients well so that no lumps are formed.
  5. In a small pan add little ghee and fry the cut coconut pieces till golden brown. Add it to the appam batter.
  6. You can make appams immediately. But here I have rested the batter for about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes.
  7. Heat ghee in a Kadai on medium flame. Take a small amount of batter in a small ladle and drop it gently into the ghee.
  8. When it puffs, turn over and cook the other side till golden brown. Drain the ghee using a slotted ladle and take it out from Kadai. Deep fry one appam at a time. Repeat the process for rest of the batter.
  9. Nei Appam is ready to serve.

They are also known as sweet appams. Unniyappams are also made during festive occasion and sold. Nei Appam is a sweet version of the appam and is favourite among the kids. To begin making the Nei Appam recipe, firstly take water and jaggery in a saucepan and boil it till the jaggery dissolves. I learnt this easy recipe from my grand ma and it can be prepared in a jiffy.
